Abstract : About 170 million individuals in the world (3% worldwide) are infected with hepatitis C Virus. Egypt has one of the highest prevalence rates of hepatitis C Virus (HCV) infection in the world as the prevalence in Egypt is over 20%. Various social practices are currently under scrutiny, including sharing razors during the haircut. Recent studies showed that the antiseptic fluids used by barbers to clean the razor did not destroy the HCV RNA. Therefore the male head shaving (in Hajj) may be a risk factor for HCV infection especially considering that many pilgrims come from regions of the world where such infection is endemic. Accordingly we intend to take the unique opportunity of the annual meeting of Muslim pilgrims in the Holy places in Saudi Arabia to study the prevalence (with genotyping) of subclinical infection of Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) in a wide range of ecological regions. The Middle East and Mediterranean, Arabian Peninsula, Indian subcontinent, Tropical and Subtropical Africa and South East Asia. Random samples of about 1000 persons will be investigated for the presence of the anti – HCV antibodies using third generation ELISA test and the presence of the RNA of HCV by PCR. Then the positive samples will be genotyped inorder to show the: 1- Prevalence of asymptomatic carriers AMONG PILGRIMS 1427h (2006g) according to the geographical region 2- Distribution of asymptomatic carriers in PILGRIMS 1427H (2006G) among various age groups and among both sexes 3- Genotype in each positive case 4- Comparison of the results with previous works 5- Conclusion and recommendations will be set up to alleviate their potential danger as hidden sources of infection in the Holy places.
