Subject : Development of an Operational Wave Prediction System for the Red Sea
Document Language : Arabic
Abstract : The Red Sea is a region of a very energetic wave climate, yet it is a region extremely lacking in wave information. The frequently occurring high seas represent a permanent threat not only to navigation but also to the Saudi coastal environments along the Red Sea. Wave measurements from buoys and Satellite, if available, are very limited in their spatial and temporal coverage, nevertheless, they do not provide near future wave predictions which can be essential for environmental, economic and safety reasons. Numerical wave modeling, therefore, constitutes the only efficient and cost-effective approach to provide the required wave information at the Red Sea. Currently operational wave prediction models provide wave conditions for the Red Sea with resolution too coarse for obtaining reliable wave information in coastal regions. Nevertheless, these models are not intended to be used in coastal and near-shore areas where complex bathymetric conditions affect the wave conditions. A high resolution operational wave forecasting system will be developed for the Red Sea. The system will be based on the state-of-the-art numerical wave model SWAN. This model can simulate the wave conditions on spatial scales that vary from coastal areas to regional seas.
